Orchard Road - The Street With The Richest Pickings

Orchard Road, the place to see and be seen, has more than 40 malls, six department stores and over 5,000 retail and food and beverage outlets. There are more on the way, even as 268 Orchard Road is edging towards completion.

Orchard Road Humble Beginnings

A century and a half ago, in the mid 1800s, it was the nutmeg, pepper and fruit orchards that gave Orchard Road its name.

Though long gone, Singapore's famed tree-lined retail strip continues to offer one of the world's premier shopping experiences. Like the Ginza of Japan, Orchard Road, a bustling promenade of splashy malls, old-school merchants, buskers, bistros and restaurants of every taste, continue to thrill the crowds, both foreigners and locals alike. 

Orchard Road has always been an important street.  It linked the Tanglin residential area to the business and commercial district of High Street and Raffles Place. The site, which included the current Ngee Ann City was a sprawling burial ground, the Tai Shan Ting cemetery in the 1950s.

But C.K. Tang department store founder, Mr Tang Choon Keng, declared it had promise and soon after that, Orchard Road began to transformation in the 1960s, after the Government zoned the area for retail use and the cemetery land was cleared.

SCOTTS

Located at the junction of Scotts Road and Orchard Road, buildings like Shaw House and Shaw Centre, Tangs@Tang Plaza and the Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel are landmarks.

Shaw House's Lido Theatre opened in 1959 with a screening of MGM’s Torpedo Run.

ORCHARD

Ion Orchard, Ngee Ann City and Paragon give this stretch of Orchard Road its glamour.  Mandarin Orchard hotel remains  with tourists owing to its prime location. Mandarin Gallery alongside the above three malls showcase upmarket brands.

CLAYMORE

Potential Upside

Mr Kwek Leng Beng, Hong Leong Group executive chairman, sees potential upside in the upper Orchard area, the relatively quieter stretch from Tanglin Shopping Centre to Tanglin Mall. Here is what he said:

"Among the buildings are Far East Shopping Centre and Orchard Parade Hotel belonging to the Far East Group. Hotel Properties Limited owns Hilton Hotel and Forum The Shopping Mall and Hard Rock Cafe. These sit on large land parcels, valuable real estate that has the potential of seeing rising capital values. This upper Orchard area has long term strategic value and a great future for capital values. And don't forget tree-lined Orchard Boulevard which also holds great potential".

Wheelock & Co Core Profit Up 31 Per Cent in 2015
 

Property and logistics conglomerate Wheelock & Company Limited, head-quartered in Hong Kong said  its core profit has increased 31 per cent to HK$10.59 billion last year due to higher property development sales and resilient rental revenue.

Wheelock Group now operates in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Singapore. Wheelock Properties is a subsidiary of the Wheelock Group
